Arizona Immigration Law

May 4, 2010

There certainly is a lot of fuss about the new law that was passed by the state of Arizona.  As I understand it, the law basically states that law enforcement personnel have the right to ask individuals for proof of citizenship.

There are laws against entering the country without permission.

There are many people who have managed to enter the country illegally.

This new law is meant to provide a means of enforcing immigration laws.

So what is the problem?

I suppose that the problem is that many people feel that being asked to provide proof of citizenship is a hassle.  The fear is that people will be routinely harassed because of their appearance.

That is a possibility.

However, I suspect that as a general rule, law enforcement personnel have better things to do with their time than to question everyone with dark skin.  I hope that they would be trained to apply this new law in a proper manner.

I carry a wide range of cards in my wallet, and even more in my vehicles.  How hard would it be to carry the necessary identification?  How often would I be asked to provide this proof?

They are simply trying to enforce laws that have long been established, that have long been broken.

Give it a chance.
