Pursue the Knowledge of the Lord

This message was preached on the very first day of the new year.  It applies to all of us regardless of our level of Christian knowledge and maturity.

I.  Lack of Knowledge:  Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.
Because you have rejected knowledge,
I also will reject you from being priest for Me;
Because you have forgotten the law of your God,
I also will forget your children.

As we face a new year we are uncertain of what the future holds.  It may be a great year, it may be a difficult year.  As individuals, we certainly want to avoid destruction if at all possible.  We should pursue knowledge.  If we can know what is good, if we can know what is right, then we can have a brighter future.

Some have forgotten or rejected the laws of God.  They have chosen to go their own way.  God allows us to choose. He encourages us to choose wisely.  To choose God’s way is the way to wisely choose.

II.  Pursue the Knowledge of the Lord:  Hosea 6:3

Let us know,
Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord.
His going forth is established as the morning;
He will come to us like the rain,
Like the latter and former rain to the earth.

There are two ways to pursue the knowledge of the Lord.  The first way is to search the scriptures.  We should read them, study them, hear them preached, discuss them, pray about them, apply them to our lives and live in obedience to them.  We will never get to the point where we know all that there is to know.  There is always more.  Press on!  Pursue the knowledge of the Lord in the Word of God!!

The second way to know the Lord is through prayer.  We have the ability to enter the very presence of God because of Jesus Christ.  He has given us the presence of His Spirit in our lives and hearts.  We should daily take time to take our eyes off of the things of this world and to focus our attention upon Him.  Let us press on!  Let us pursue the knowledge of the Lord in the Spirit of Christ!!

III.  Seek the Lord:  Hosea 10:12

Sow for yourselves righteousness;
Reap in mercy;
Break up your fallow ground,
For it is time to seek the Lord,
Till He comes and rains righteousness on you.

Once we know what is right in the sight of the Lord, we are responsible to do what is right.  With knowledge comes responsibility.  We do not do this in our own strength, but by the power of the Spirit of God which enables us to be the people He has called us to be.  To God be the Glory!

We are to forgive, even as we have been forgiven.  We are not to “repay evil for evil” but to “overcome evil with good”.

We need to ask God to help us to recognize those parts of our life that we have not surrendered to Him already.  We need to ask God to soften our hearts so that His Word and His Spirit might continue the work in us.  May our lives not be fallow, but fruitful for His Holy Name.
