God’s People, Plan & Power

As the people of God, we do not fulfill the plan of God in our own power, but in the power of God.

I.  By My Spirit:  Zechariah 4:6

So he answered and said to me:

“This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel:
‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’
Says the Lord of hosts.

For those of you familiar with the Pentecostal Evangel this verse is found on the cover.  It is a central verse for the Assemblies of God.  We recognize that the work that we do, is not done in our own strength, but in the strength that comes from the power of God.  We attribute success to God.

II.  Gideon:  Judges 7:2-7, 20-22

And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.

But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. Then the Lord said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place.”

Please note that God did not want the people to think that they had achieved success on their own strength.  The Midianite army numbered 135,000 men.  God did not want the Israelites to think that they could take on those kind of odds by themselves.  They could have thought they were extremely tough warriors, able to take on those kind of odds.  Reduced to 30o men, no one will doubt that it was the Lord who fought for them.

Then the three companies blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers—they held the torches in their left hands and the trumpets in their right hands for blowing—and they cried, “The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!” 21 And every man stood in his place all around the camp; and the whole army ran and cried out and fled. 22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man’s sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath.

Once the number of soldiers had been reduced, God revealed His plan to Gideon.  The men were divided into three groups.  Each man carried a pitcher, a torch and a trumpet,  They surrounded the camp at night; on signal they broke the pitchers, held up the torches, blew on the horns, and shouted.  The camp awoke in confusion and turned on each other.  God had given His plan, to His people, and by His power, it worked.

We too, can be the people of God.  We should seek to maintain a right relationship with Him.  He is more than our God.  He is our heavenly father.  We are His children.

We too, can be a part of the plan of God.  God desires to use us.  He will reveal His plan to us if we will ask Him for direction.  Do we ask Him for direction, or do we simply do things our own way?

If we are the people of God, doing the plan of God, then we can be assured that we will receive the power of God.  God will not tell us to do something that He does not then supply the power to complete it.  God is faithful.  He is our strength.

III.  Prepared:  Proverbs 21:31

The horse is prepared for the day of battle,
But deliverance is of the Lord.

This has been one of my favorite verses since I was a teenager.  We are to do our part, but God is the one who gives success.  The people with Gideon had to follow through on the plan in order to see the deliverance of the Lord.  We too, are to follow through on the plan that God reveals to us, then we will see victory.  Not because of what we have done, but because of what God does through us.  To Him be the glory.

God’s people, following God’s plan, will surely have the power of God and will be victorious.
