I.  Scripture Originated With God:  II Peter 1:19-21

And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; 20 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, 21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.

The word translated as interpretation in verse 20, can also be translated as origin, which makes more sense to me.  The scriptures are not merely the words of men, but God speaking to us through their words.  We can listen to the advice of men and choose to reject it if we do not agree with it, but we should not reject the Word of God spoken to us in the scriptures.

II. Saying One Thing/Doing Another:  I John 1:6-7

If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

What we do should match up with what we say.  If we say that we are Christians, then we should be seeking to live Christ-like lives.

III.  Do Not Love the World:  I John 2:15-17

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

What is most important to you?  It should be God.  God does not want to simply be a part of our lives, He wants to be our life’s priority.  God first.  Everything else second.

IV.  Help Those in Need:  I John 3:16-18

By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.

We should be willing to help those who are in need. I suppose that you could call it love in action.  James says that “Faith without works is dead”  Let us have a living faith and love that is expressed by our compassion for others.

V.  Greater is He That is in You:  I John 4;4

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

When we encounter the various challenges and difficulties of this life, it is comforting to remind ourselves that our strength does not come from ourselves, but from the One who is within us.  Through God, we have the strength to do what He has called us to do.

VI.  Summary:  I John 5:1-5

Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The first step is to believe in Jesus.  Next, we grow in our love for God, and for others.  Third, we learn to live lives of obedience to the commandments of God.  This is made possible because of our relationship with Christ.  So that we are in fact, over-comers.
