Faith and Works

July 17, 2008

Last night in our Bible study at church,  we were in James chapter two.  It deals with the question of faith and works.  During the discussion we discussed two dangerous views and came up with two excellent statements.

The first dangerous view is the idea that  good works will save us.  There are many people in this world that think that God is love, and they are good people, so of course they will go to heaven.  This is not the road to salvation.  We have all sinned and need forgiveness in Christ.  Our trust and faith must be in the sacrifice of Jesus, which results in a living relationship with Him.  We had better not be trusting that we are “good”.

The second dangerous view is that since we are saved by grace through faith, works don’t matter.  That we can remain in sinful behaviour and write it off as “only human”.  We are called to “cease to do evil, and learn to do good”.  We are called to repentance and faith.

The first statement is: “We are saved through faith for good works.” (c.f. Ephesians 2:8-10)

The second statement is: “A living faith will produce works of righteousness.”  ( c.f. James 2 )

I believe that these two statements concisely sum up the proper relationship between faith and works.
